Communicating in High School
It seems like high school is the time in every person’s life where they have the most trouble making themselves understood. As a high school student I can totally relate the age old problem that teenagers encounter of not being taken seriously, then expected to perform adult tasks.Maybe this inconsistency in expectations is the reason why kids age 14-18 can’t properly express themselves. High school is the only time in a person’s life where they are constantly being asked about their plans for the future while at the same time still having to ask to go to the bathroom. In my opinion, that is unfair. I have experienced trouble making myself heard countless times in high school by different adults who see me not as a capable free thinking young adult, but as a simple minded kid, simply because I haven’t lived for a certain amount of years. Luckily, I have begun to notice a change in my treatment, and while I would like to think it is because I have earned it through some act of maturity, I realize that it probably solely due to the fact that I won’t have to continue to wake up at 8 in the morning any more and go to high school.
Soren, I appreciate your sincerity and frank assessment of the way you observe the inconsistency in expectation that adults have for teens. It has been a while that I have thought about what a student's perspective is when a teacher's policy is for them to "ask to go to the bathroom". There are responsibilities that teachers's have that students may not realize, for example, a teacher must be accountable for knowing where the students is at all times when they are the responsible adult in charge. That may sound regimented, but the overall idea is related to safety in case of a major catastrophe or lock-down. But, that being said, it does seem that often times, there is a double standard that can be seen by many of the adults that teens 14-18 encounter. According to some, adolescence can range anywhere from 10-24 years of age which is a huge span. Just think of all the physical, psychological, emotional and educational experiences occur during those years! Well thanks for sharing your thoughts and concerns regarding the whole idea of communicating in high school!
